It's a girl ... Prized Icon's first born is a beauty

An exciting era has dawned for Kooringal Stud with the arrival of Prized Icon’s first foal.

The attractive chestnut filly with a white blaze was welcomed at the Wagga stud in the early hours of Wednesday morning (August 5).

“Prized Icon is an outstanding individual so we have very high expectations of his foals,” Kooringal Stud’s Angus Lamont said.

“And his first one to arrive has certainly not disappointed.

“She’s a well balanced filly with great bone ... a cracking type.”

The foal is from the winning Mossman mare Cosmic View, who is a daughter of the stakes-placed Starry Light (by Danehill Dancer).

Hailing from the same family is the top class New Zealander Bawalaksana.

The dual Group 1-winning Prized Icon was one of the best of his generation on the racetrack and has also been quick to impress in the breeding barn.

Prized Icon covered 120 mares in initial season at stud and boasted an excellent fertility rate.

“He has around 40 foals due before the end of August so the next three weeks will be an exciting period,” Angus said.

Prized Icon, a son of renowned sire of successful sires More Than Ready, was a precocious two-year-old who never finished out of a place in seven starts as a juvenile.

The Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick provided Prized Icon with his first taste of Group 1 glory.

Prized Icon went on to claim the time-honoured Victoria Derby (2500m) at three and was placed another four times at Group 1 level, accumulating $2.1 million in prizemoney in the process.

“Not only was he an elite performer on the track and superbly bred, he has a fantastic nature and attitude which is so often overlooked,” Angus said.

Prized Icon will stand his second season at stud at a fee of $11,000 (including GST) alongside the War Front stallion The Brothers War.
