Shrapnel proving to be a fertile young stallion

OCTOBER, 2012: Kooringal Stud's first season sire Shrapnel has passed his first major test as a sire following the initial scans taken of his early contingent of mares. Stud principal Stuart Lamont reports that the news concerning Shrapnel could hardly be any more encouraging and the exciting stallion prospect is now well on his way to a bright stud career.

“We are looking at better than 90 per cent fertility for Shrapnel,” confirmed Stuart. “He really has taken to his new job particularly well and all of the early signs could not be any more positive.”

Shrapnel’s fertility is very much in accordance with his sireline as a whole. His sire Charge Forward returned 87.8 per cent fertility in the last breeding season fully accounted for on the Australian Stud Book website, while his acclaimed grandsire Red Ransom (USA) returned 81.78 per cent fertility over 10 collective seasons serving in Australia — and he was still serving into his twenties!

A select number of lifetime nominations priced at just $9900 (inc GST) are still available in Shrapnel. His advertised service fee for 2012 is $6600 (inc GST).

Kooringal Stud secures Shrapnel for stud duties

The brilliant Group winning 2YO & 3YO sprinter Shrapnel has been purchased by Kooringal Stud and is to stand his first stud season in 2012 at the Lamont family's long established thoroughbred nursery in the Riverina region of New South Wales.

The best performed son of Arrowfield Stud's Group 1-winning racehorse and Group 1-producing sire Charge Forward, Shrapnel established himself as one of the leading sprinting talents of his generation after joining the Mark Kavanagh stable at Flemington as a $450,000 graduate of the 2009 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Shrapnel wasted little time in establishing his future stud prospects, winning in juvenile stakes company at only his second career start. Produced in the Group 3 SAJC Marsh Breeders' Stakes (1200m) after a debut third in the Listed SAJC Queen Adelaide Stakes (1000m), Shrapnel scored with a half-length to spare over the bonny filly Yosei --- a subsequent winner of three major Group 1 events on the Australian racing calendar during her own distinguished career.

The Queen Adelaide-Breeders' Stakes brace of engagements proved to be the only assignments of Shrapnel's 2-year-old season as the exciting colt was given an extended winter spell in readiness for his all-important Classic year. In just five starts as a 3-year-old, Shrapnel not only went on to win on two more occasions, including a feature Group 2 event, but also record a prestigious Group 1 placing in one of the biggest contests staged during VRC Melbourne Cup Carnival week.

Shrapnel's spring 3-year-old campaign saw the highly-regarded colt add a competitive Moonee Valley 3-year-old Plate (1200m) to his winning record, before lining-up in the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes against some of the finest 3-year-old sprinters in Australia. The contest witnessed Shrapnel run an admirable third behind multiple Group 1 winner Star Witness, the Kooringal Stud newcomer finishing in advance of Buffering, Sistine Angel, Solar Charged and Pressday --- all proven Group 1 performers of the same generation.

Shrapnel's autumn 3-year-old campaign again witnessed him score in major Pattern Race company. The second of two starts resulted in a clear-cut one and a half length victory in the Group 2 SAJC Yallambee Classic (1200m) at Morphettville in which the brilliant short-course specialist led from start-to-finish in an exceptional display of sustained speed.

Immediately following Shrapnel's Yallambee Classic victory, trainer Mark Kavanagh declared: "He's more than a very good horse. We bought him as a stallion prospect and you'd have to think he's halfway there now."

Following the successful purchase of Shrapnel by the Lamonts, it is going to be the clients of Kooringal Stud who will have the first opportunity to breed from Shrapnel, a multiple Group winning sprinter boasting supreme sprinting bloodlines notably free of Danzig blood.

Shrapnel is a representative of the acclaimed Roberto sireline through the highly successful Arrowfield Stud stallion Charge Forward and his internationally heralded sire Red Ransom (USA). This exciting young stallion prospect not only provides a total outcross for the countless daughters of Danehill (USA) or Danehill sire-sons at stud, but access to one of the most progressive female families currently in the Australian Stud Book.

Shrapnel is the second of two Group winners produced from Fragmentation, a juvenile stakes winning daughter of Snippets. Significantly, Fragmentation's first stakes winner is the Group 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted, whose services have been available at Eliza Park, Victoria, for the past two seasons at a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Shrapnel is to stand his first stud season at Kooringal Stud at a fee of $6600 (inc. GST). For any further information, contact Stuart Lamont 0427 246 422 or Angus Lamont 0429 842 875.

Sam Fairgray, Arrowfield Stud operations manager

“Charge Forward himself is a very muscular type of horse with a great head on him and that's what he's leaving in his progeny.

“Shrapnel, I remember him as a yearling, he was sold by Highgrove and they stayed in the same barn as us at Inglis‘. Every time he came out he would catch your eye, he was just one of those horses that if you see you go Wow!

“[Shrapnel is] Just the perfect specimen really. He's got a lovely head, shoulder and hind-quarter, and Charge Forward does that because he has that physique himself.“
