Friday September 29th
The Cliff Brown-trained homebred Pavlova taking the
spoils as a result of a controversial stewards’ room
decision in the Listed JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on
Friday night, scoring from odds-on favourite Spinney
(Octagonal) by a half head, with Delvecchio (Green
Perfume) a further long neck away third.
Brown is aiming to qualify her for the Melbourne Cup
instead and he will focus on the Group 2 Winning Edge
Presentation Stakes, in which a win would qualify her
for the Melbourne Cup and almost assure her of a decent
Melbourne Cup penalty.
Pavlova is a half-sibling to the Last Tycoon stallion
and Kooringal Sire
FUBU, a winner at 1800 metres and placed twice
at Group 1. She is out of the Luskin Star mare
Hospitable; herself a half sister to the South
Australian Derby winner Markham – a Salieri gelding who
was trained by Cliff Brown to finish less than a length
third to Might and Power and Doriemus in the 1997
Melbourne Cup. He was also fourth in the Caulfield Cup.
Perhaps Brown’s ambitious plan with Pavlova is not so
far-fetched. The late-blooming four-year-old took nine
starts to win, and then at a modest Ipswich event over
1600 metres. Sent straight to the top for the Queensland
Oaks (Gr 1), she ran wide and finished fourth. She will
now have her next start in the Gr. 1 Metropolitan at
Randwick.
