On-Farm Breaking In

The Autumn months have been very productive, with newest resident staff member Matt Butt managing the breaking in of several youngsters.  The first of Shrapnel’s progeny have come into the yearling barn for their first breaking in & preparation and are proving to have inherited their sire’s relaxed, co-operative and trainable temperaments yet have great athleticism and size, making them promising racing stock.

Matt hails from Jugiong where he manages a horse property and has 13 years experience in breaking in thoroughbreds and stock horses both in Australia and Canada.  Matt’s methods are based around natural   horsemanship and are very similar to Peter Cowell’s (see page 1 of the newsletter, Peter manages our weanling education program), meaning that the continuation of education for these breakers is seamless, building on their existing understanding and giving the horses confidence in their handler.

Matt says “I have found that the breakers have had an  exceptional foundation of groundwork which is a real credit to Kooringal staff for the effort that has been put in to each horse.  It has made the breaking in  process a lot more efficient and less stressful on the horse, as it has been very straightforward as a continuation on the horse’s previous education.”
