Kooringal Stud is situated midway between Sydney and Melbourne on the boundary of the Riverina and South West Slopes of NSW, 20 kilometres northeast of Wagga Wagga.

The property comprises an area of 1000 hectares (2500 acres) and has been in the care of the Lamont family since 1910.

Kooringal Stud has excellent facilities with forty doubled fenced paddocks surrounded by some 40,000 trees. Each paddock has an adjacent yard and is linked to 3 main sets of yards by a system of laneways, which enables the safe movement of all horses. The paddocks vary in size from 2 hectares to 60 hectares and are regularly sown down to pastures of Lucerne, Clover and Phalaris.

Kooringal Stud is managed by the Lamont family (Stuart and Penny pictured) and is very fortunate to have a band of experienced and dedicated staff members to assist with the management and day to day running of the Stud.

Angus Lamont

Angus left school in 2003 and spent 12 months on a cattle station in the Northern Territory called Austral Downs, owned by AA Co.

He then worked on Kooringal in 2004 before studying Horse Business Management at Marcus Oldham College in Geelong.

He completed the course with a distinction average and won several awards including the Thoroughbred Industry Award, Marcus Oldham College Old Students Association Award for Practical Skills and was the inaugural winner of the UK and International Breeding Scholarship.

This award has seen Angus partake in work at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket England and County Meath in Ireland throughout 2007. This opportunity has helped him gather a range of experience in all aspects of the breeding industry throughout the UK and Ireland as well as assisting at sales in Deauville.

Angus returned to Kooringal in 2008 as Assistant manager.




Tim Forster

After Leaving school in 1989 Tim entered the CSU Bachelor of Applied Science (Equine Studies) course. Tim’s first introduction to Kooringal Stud was through the work experience program in 1990. Tim worked at Kooringal in ’91 and ’92 breeding seasons and has continued his association with horses throughout the world.

Nine years of extensive travel and international experience pursuing a riding career in North America and Europe has resulted in Tim progressing to the level of Professional Equestrian Trainer in dressage, showjumping and western disciplines even extending to the controversial art of bull fighting.

Tim has returned to Kooringal on several occasions to extend his knowledge within the breeding industry, and willingly shares his knowledge with staff, equine students and management over the years.

In conjunction with his riding, training and breeding interests, Tim has invented the Control-A-Foal harness which is currently being introduced to the global equine market to assist in the management of foals in the breeding and veterinary world. Tim returned to Kooringal full time in 2007 and manages our three stallions and the breeding programme.




Jacqui Coghlan

Jacqui commenced at Kooringal in September 2006 after studying the Bachelor of Applied Science (Equine Studies) at CSU Wagga. Through her university studies Jacqui received a scholarship to work and study at the National Stud, Newmarket UK where she graduated with distinction in the National Stud Diploma.

Jacqui has had a keen interest in horses since she was a small girl and still enjoys riding and competing locally with enjoyed success.

Jacqui’s main role at Kooringal is the care of mares and foals. Jacqui is active in assisting with the associated reproductive management procedures and is also our office manager.




Michael Wupperman

Woody joined Kooringal Stud in 2008 and is currently completing his second year of the Bachelor of Equine Science at CSU Wagga. Woody grew up in Melbourne, spending as many of his weekends and holidays as possible at a small racing stable. For the past few years he has worked as a stablehand, and was involved in driving and training harness racing horses at various Pacing Stables. Woody is now involved in all aspects at Kooringal Stud, with his main role of caring for the weanlings, yearlings and spelling horses.




Julie & Peter Cowell

Julie & Peter continue to work with us at Kooringal and are responsible for the education and handling of foals, weanlings and yearlings. They have extensive experience in the equine industry both having travelled overseas and between them notched up about 15 years with us at Kooringal.




Stuart Lamont

Stuart continues his “hands on” management, overseeing and working closely with all facets of the breeding and rearing of horses at Kooringal Stud. Dedication and communication is vital and we believe we have a unique working relationship at Kooringal and welcome you to visit by arrangement.
